“How can I get my toddler to __________?”
I’m sure you can fill in the blank!
As the mother of 3 girls, ages 2, 3 and 8, chances are that I’ve been in your shoes.
I’ve been puzzled about how to get a picky eater or “binge eating toddler” to actually eat a meal… how to save face after a particularly horrifying tantrum in the school parking lot… when to start potty training… looking for answers about how to get toddlers to sleep in their own beds… searching for an age appropriate toddler activity.
Those shoes get pretty raggety, don’t they? The life of a toddler mom seems to be a constant experiment in how-to-get-another-person-to-eat-sleep-behave-and-not-kill-their-sister!
This site focuses on toddlers
Toddlers are technically children between the ages of 12 - 36 months (1 - 3 years) who are learning to “toddle” or walk. You can see some basic developmental milestones at www.wikipedia.org. The behaviors that go along with “toddlerhood” — such as tantrums, sleeping problems, need for lots of parent involvement, still getting comfortable with potty training – last well beyond age 3.
For that reason this site goes well beyond age 3, too. It’s mostly focused on toddlers, but also has details for older and younger kids as well. I guess someday when my kids have their own kids I’ll just start writing about grandparenting!
Initially, I started with my own need to have my mysterious little people explained. Along the route, I uncovered lots of interesting information — and I realized that without this information I never would have made it this far!
I’m adding to this site all the time. Right now you’ll find:
- Information about toddler activities, including where to find even Spongebob coloring activity pages to print out
- All about toddler milestones, such as how to get your “binge eating toddler” or “picky eater” to finally eat, how to deal with toddler tantrums, and finding daycare and preschools
- Interesting funny children’s stories, which you’ll find in my blog and sprinkled throughout the site
As you poke around, you’ll be introduced to my own girls and my own adventures (and mis-adventures) in parenting. I only give you their first initials — in hopes that when they someday meet their fiancee’s parents (or go through the Senate confirmation process for nomination to the Supreme Court) details won’t come out about their tantrums, potty training, and toddler eating habits!
You’ll meet these (and more) ongoing characters:
- C~, our baby who is 2. She’s right in the middle of potty training and her Dora the Explorer potty seat is her favorite topic. She loves pretty much everything her big sisters love, especially trying to wear as much of their lip gloss as she can.
- T~, who is almost 4. Last year was her first year in preschool, and she’s growing up so fast! She is our picky eater and is famous for earth-shattering eardrum-splitting tantrums, all of which you’ll find out about as you explore this site.
- E~, almost 9, was my sole test-subject for many years. She’s now very interested in Nancy Drew and Webkinz, an avid softball player (her team won a playoff game this year) and figure skater (just moved into Alpha I, if you know skater-speak). She has been so patient with her poor mother who knew so little at the beginning… but you’ll hear about all that, too.
- You’ll also at times get an earful about my husband, H~, who is a teacher, basketball coach and softball coach. He, too, has been very patient as I used him as a human guinea pig to test recipes… sometimes without his knowledge (but please don’t tell!).
Be sure to bookmark this site so you can come back and poke around when you have time. You can also subscribe to my blog (via email or RSS), and be sure to subscribe to my newsletter which comes out weekly to answer FAQs from this site’s readers.
Well, I think I hear an argument about to break out over Barbie, so I’ve got to cut this short. Let’s stay in touch… talk to you soon!
